I was on Facebook today and came across an article on a favorite actress. No one could decide her age, but there is an app that guesses your age from a photo. It had her in her mid-forties.
I thought, “Hey everyone, except my kids, tell me how young I look.” The absences of wrinkles which they apparently are blinded to, and I can clearly see, lead me to take the most recent of my pictures and see what the app saw.
I am approaching my seventieth birthday, and the app so kindly kissed me at the age of fifty-eight; while my picture took eight years ago when I started my professional writing career at age sixty- two, tagged me as fifty-one.
The bad news is I look 58 but in those actual eight years I aged seven years. That is almost a year to year growth. BUT I'm ahead, or behind as the case may be, as I am almost twelve years older than the app projects.
Now, let’s assume, I know that can get you in trouble, but let’s assume the app is right and not wrong. Fantastic, my face looks young but is my inside body as young? That is the meat of the matter. I really don’t want to die looking young and dying sooner than I want to go because my insides don’t match my outside.
The same with books. Do you have a great cover and a story riddled with errors? Young to writing authors are afraid of editing, afraid if their words are cut, they are not a writer worthy of continuing. Not so. What will happen though is people will read you initially but will stop because you do not appear to have grown.
Most of the popular authors of today have old or out of print stories, hanging around or listed if not available. If you are lucky, you may find that old long ago story and be amazed how you enjoy the story but cannot believe how much they’ve grown in the years of writing. Their first step was editing.
If you are still hanging on to every p, q, and r, it is time to re-exam your priorities and find yourself beta readers, editors, and critique partners. Find people you trust to give you a truly honest but not an evisceration. Don’t allow anyone to kill your dreams, but be aware you may have to change to achieve them.
I have two books being published this month,
Digging Bone is getting a facelift and editing. And this is the link to Paula Shene's Amazon page.
The Peacock Writers Presents, also due out this month, May 2015 has undergone its bath of fire and the 10th collection for Children’s Charities is named Sandy Pages
