‘Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.’ - Clarke’s Third Law
Janol, doesn't know what to do with his life, he doesn't want to take over running his parents' farm. Then one day he helps rescue the enigmatic and beautiful Onnil. When Onnil says says that she is leaving to prevent an invasion from a neighbouring continent, Janol travels with her. As they travel Janol discovers more about his world, that it was built by people, how magic works, what a rainbow is, why there are no wasps and why the years are named after ancient coffee brands. But why does Onnil keep going on about Evil Empires? but then she says the chosen one in these sorts of stories is always a farmer's son. But then she's the mentor and the mentor always dies, she doesn't like that part. And does Onnil have an orange soul? Together they journey across three continents, to the Spoke, where a large tower connects the sky to the ground, where Onnil can build a device that will allow them to defeat the invading army. |
This is a sequel to 'A slight Mistake in the Code', so I would prefer if you read that first.
President Filip III of the Beesidian Republic has authorised a mission, an expedition south to investigate the continents of Teenin and Wyive. He really wants to find out about the advanced technology the Wyivian, Janol was using when he travelled through the neighbouring continent of Estoo. After all, the second meeting between Janol and the Republic couldn’t go any more wrong than the first meeting, could it? So when Janol is kidnapped and taken back to the Republic, he is not happy about the situation and he is definitely not going to stand trial for the dubious crime of being an android. All Janol wants to do is return home, but instead he gets caught up with executions, revolutionaries, robbing banks and destroying presidential statues. Then there is the KLF who are waging a war on the icy continent of Kaytoo against the Republic. There are also two new women in Janol’s life: Golrin an agent for the Republic and Safron a news reporter. Meanwhile Janol’s girlfriend and his best friend travel north, back to the Spire in order to make the Beesidians a threat they cannot ignore. Janol (with Onnil’s help) has already destroyed an Evil Empire but was it the wrong one? And who is the wombat? |
The third part of the trilogy of 'A Slight Mistake in the Code' and 'No Longer Yesterday'
They say revenge is a dish best served cold. And the new President of the Beesidian Republic (Filip IV) wants revenge served at absolute zero. With knowledge of the entry codes to the Esfive Spire in the realm to the north, he sends three of his best-armed ships on a voyage of exploration, though access to its Spoke will not be easy as Esfive was originally an escape-proof prison. He also sends six agents to Wyive to try and recruit some local politicians, ferment dissent and if possible have another attempt at kidnapping a mage. It’s a pity the satellites (aka spy-octopuses) don’t work though – they keep falling off the Inner Sphere. Janol and Onnil are also busy. Janol sails south to the continent of Emchoo to see if he can make friendly contact with the inhabitants, while Onnil travels to the Spoke (where a team of assassins is waiting for her) so she can visit the Realm of S1 to see if the android and wand factories are still functioning. But then Janol is destined to destroy the Beesidian Republic. There’s an ancient prophecy saying so. Well not that ancient, as Onnil only wrote it a few weeks ago. And don’t say the name George too loudly. That’s the name of a demon from the fifth circle of hell (or was it the third abyss, well somewhere like that). You don’t want to attract his attention. |

They say that the earth shifts on its axis every 200,000 years...
When the planet shifted, most of the surface dwellers were destroyed. The few pockets of survivors were left without technology and little supplies, but they built a simple feudal society on the rubble of the city. Meanwhile, the creatures in the deep places moved closer to the surface, taking over the old underground transport tunnels abandoned by the humans. Their own Shamanic way of life had survived only by staying out of sight of the humans who habitually killed what they did not understand. Five generations of humans passed and the descendants of survivors settled into a way of life that was simple but satisfying, until one day a man wandered into one of the old tunnels... |
A young girl flees her home and an unwanted marriage. Desperation takes her to the riverside, the site where as a toddler she was patted kindly by the goblin who had befriended the human ruler, Count Anton. But another memory of that day unsettles her as she pushes the small boat into the current. A memory of bubbles in the river, and of blood. There's something in the water still. Driven by a premonition that she belongs with the people across the river, she soon meets the children of Magicians. . .and of goblins. Yet, there are greater challenges to face. In the midst of conflict between species and between the ever combative northern and southern humans, a new enemy arises from over the sea. The goblins see the danger of this invasion to their own uneasy peace with the familiar local humans, but they disagree among themselves as to whether they will best serve their kind by helping the surface dwellers, or by leaving all humans to kill each other once and for all.

The elements are the least of their problems when they find themselves saddled with an airsick clerk, a crewmember suspected of working for the East India Company and a love sick farm girl whose headstrong misconceptions compel her to seek adventure where no decent woman would wander unescorted. Battling businessmen, mechanoids and villagers armed with torches and pitchforks, Captain Bonny must decide who to trust, and if the only rational course of action is one of apparent madness.

In the world of the goblins, there is only one rule...
Khemael, called both Angel and Demon by the superstitious humans, is a creature of beauty and grace, with a mostly human appearance. His love of stretching his leather-like wings and flying freely in the world of men brings far too much attention to the existence of the goblins, who long once again to be forgotten in their underground world. Haghuf, with the old ways entrenched into the very core of his being, knows that the inevitable responsibility will fall to him. He must destroy the beautiful creature who, in the world of the humans, would be called his grandson. To complicate the matter, King Alaric claims Khemael as kin, and refers to him as ‘nephew’. To kill a relative of the king would renew hostilities between the humans and the goblins, despite the love for the goblins that Alaric shares with his father, the exiled Count Anton. For these reasons, Khemael’s sense of adventure has continued unchecked for too long. Amidst unrest among the more fearful humans south of the river and disparity in the world of the goblins, messages come from Anton who travels in the north. A different kind of invader than those they have encountered before moves towards the city. A tribal people, close akin to Anton’s people, seek better climate and food supplies than the cold north has provided for several generations. They are moving south. There are too many of the nomads to assimilate into the world that Alaric’s ancestors forged from devastation. Whatever happens, the impending incursion will bring change to their world... and Khemael’s flights threaten to bring the danger to the goblins. |
